Just got back from representing Truman State University at the Flw National Guard College Fishing Tournament on the Detroit River with partner Mike McCarthy. Neither of us had ever fished the Detroit River before so we were excited for a chance to get to fish such different fishery. We left early Friday morning and made the 9-10 hour hike up to Michigan pondering where we were going to go and what techniques we were going to use to catch our fish. Â Having done our research and map study we decided to fish a series of canals and bays in hopes of getting a limit of largemouth and then trying to figure out how to catch a better smallmouth. The key to fishing any river is understanding how fish use and relate to current breaks.

Being a college angler I have learned what parts of your tackle you can skimp on and what you can’t in order to get the job done. When you have to choose between eating macaroni and cheese every night for dinner and having new lures or splurging on a meal from Popeyes and not having new lures you find out pretty quick what tackle you need and don’t need in order to put fish in the boat.
The most important part of your equipment that you can invest in is your line. When you have your reels spooled with a quality line like the High Performance Copolymer from GAMMA you can make those long smooth casts to keep your bait in the strike zone longer.
